TRAINING TIPS

Costume or Classy - the Do's and Don'ts of the Wearing the Crown
By Laura Slifer, Ms. North America, finalist Mrs. Globe

How many of you are familiar with the timeless tale called “A Christmas Carol”? You know the one: Old Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future? Come on, raise your hands! If you are not familiar with it, do not worry. I am going to tell you a similar tale called “A Pageant Story”. So close your eyes and as the spirit of “Pageants Past” follow me back twenty years.

Imagine sitting in a room full of people who are all eagerly awaiting the arrival of Miss/Mrs./Ms. “I’m A Winner”. As she arrives in the doorway, the room starts buzzing with excited murmurs and everyone begins craning to get the first glimpse of “the queen”. The emcee proudly and with great fanfare announces her arrival. She steps into the room gracefully and is greeted with thunderous applause. From head to toe she is elegantly dressed like the queen she is – complete with her sparkling crown. After all, she IS royalty! There was never a doubt in anybody’s mind whether she would arrive wearing her crown, right? Close your eyes again and follow me.

Come with me now to the year 2007. Imagine sitting in that same room full of people but this time the buzz in the air is not excitement. Instead, it is judgmental expectation. You see, in our world today, Miss/Mrs./Ms. “I’m A Winner”at times can get a bad rap. 'Another mindless beauty queen' who does nothing but seize every opportunity she can to show up wearing that silly crown on her head.

The question then, is this: How can we avoid others’ perceptions that we are wearing a Halloween costume, rather than a respected piece of prestige? What can we do to bring the dignity, grace and elegance back to the crown? I call it, knowing the Do’s and Don’t's of wearing the crown. Test yourself and see if you are projecting a costume or classy image.

  • Situation: You are in a parade, dressed in a cocktail dress or gown. Do or Don't?
  • Answer: DO wear your crown if you are in a parade and dressed appropriately in a cocktail dress or suit. (I do not recommend gowns during the day, it is very 80's). If you are in a moving vehicle, wear it. Take it off when walking around.

  • Situation: You are invited to attend another pageant system that is different than yours. Do or Don't?
  • Answer: DO wear your crown when visiting other pageants but only after asking that pageant’s director if it is acceptable. You never want to take away from the sponsoring system or queen.

  • Situation: You are asked to attend an event before 5:00 pm. Do or Don't?
  • Answer: DO NOT wear your crown before 5:00 pm. You can bring it with you and pull it out for a photo, or place it on display, but it is best to not wear it at all before 5:00 pm. We recommend wearing just a banner, or invest in a quality piece of jewelry that you can wear when neither a crown or banner is appropriate.

  • Situation: You are asked to attend a casual event (day or evening) where you will be wearing jeans, shorts, flip flops or tennis shoes, beachwear, or a sun dress. Do or Don't?
  • Answer: DO NOT wear your crown unless you are appropriately dressed in a cocktail suit, cocktail dress or formal gown.

  • Situation: You are at an appearance and someone (including a guy) asks to try on your crown. Do or Don't?
  • Answer:DO NOT allow others’ to wear or “try on” your crown, or your banner. Especially a guy. Never, never make a mockery of your crown. It is a coveted piece that only one person a year is to wear. When you put it on another person's head, you make it into a costume piece. Imagine the camera going off and capturing that person wearing your signature piece. Others do not know it is not a real photo.
So how do you handle those sweet young girls who are enamored with your crown and stare at you with stars in their eyes? I recommend carrying an inexpensive tiara with you and put it on their head for a photo opportunity.

  • Situation: You are asked to attend a walk-a-thon or charity event and stay around for photos? Do or Don't?
  • Answer: DO NOT wear your crown to sporting events, walk-a-thons, food drives or other fast-paced or casual appearances. Your banner is sufficient and will look much better in photos.

The most important thing to remember is that historically, crowns have been used as a symbol of royalty. Our current day crowns are to be accent pieces for formal use only. When we wear them incorrectly, we look as though we are donning a costume, not elegance, taking away from the issues that many of us want others to stop and listen to.

As we head into the year 2007, I invite all of you to become the spirits of “Pageants Future”. Let’s all work together to bring back the grace, dignity and symbol of service the crown was meant to bring to pageantry.

SECRETS OF BEAUTY

Ick, Don't Lick!!

Did you know that one of the worst things you can do to your lips is lick them? It is true. The saliva in your mouth will serve as a drying agent, causing your lips to lose their natural moisture.

So, if your lips need moisture, use a high moisture stick rather than your tongue, the results will be much more appealing.

WORDS OF INSPRIATION

What is Mental-Vision?

Mental Vision is a word I came up with one day while meditating on my favorite Proverb, "What you think is what you will become". Having a winning Mental Vision is the daily practice of monitoring the video and emotional messages in your mind (ie, our internal televisions) and making sure that what you are "viewing" from within, is life giving. If it is not, then give yourself the gift of self-empowerment and make the choice to change the emotional channel.

WIN Mental Vision is a series of writings that directly address our channel changing abilities so life can be a winning journey. Enjoy!

Mental Vision Message of the Month:

Are You Remarkable?

One of the traits of success is to be remarkable. To be remarkable means that others take the time to "remark" about you.

To many this might seem offensive and often times after we hear something about our self or our company, our first response to "remarks" is to either cower, change, or get defensive. What if however, being the recipient of other's remarks, is actually a sign of greatness? What if, the only way you can become "remarkable" is to receive the "remarks" of others? (Think about that).

If you want to become "remarkable" the only way is to gain the courage to step out of the box and do something that will cause people to "remark". If no one is saying anything about you, it is time to step up your dreaming and do some things to create "remarks". Take the test and see if you have what it takes to be "remarkable".

UNREMARKABLE PEOPLE...

REMARKABLE PEOPLE

[] Are concerned about people approving of them.

[] Are not afraid to do things that will make them stand out.

[] Have a dream that they either talk about or pursue on a part time basis.

[] Have a passion inside that will not let them quit.
[] Always play it safe.

[] Are not afraid of taking risk, knowing that a risky idea MIGHT fail, but a boring idea will DEFINITELY fail.
[] Wait for the right time, right place, right circumstance and right people.
[] Do not wait for perfect timing or perfect circumstances, but instead move forward with what they have.
[] Talk about other's lives and their plan for them [] Live out their own life and share that vision with others.
[] Stand in judgment

[] Stand for something and change their own life, someone else's life, or the world.

EMPOWERING EXERCISE OF THE MONTH:

This month, let's empower each other to be remarkable. Here is how:

  • Review the above line item list of what it takes to be remarkable. Chose your favorite and let us know why.
  • Making the choice this week (or on a weekly basis) to step out of your box and intentionally do something to create "remarks", remembering that only with "remarks" can we become "remarkable".
  • Log on our WEBSITE FORUM and share with us what you will try. Keep us posted on the outcome and most important, have fun becoming "remarkable!"
